Christmas in the mountains

Christmas thoughts...Sam says he wants to cook macaroni and cheese (Paula Dean's recipe) and baked beans for Christmas dinner. Joquita suggested that the grandchildren cook the Christmas dinner...good idea!
How about Christmas Eve Chili and candlelight bingo on our first night at the cabin?
Paul has volunteered to do breakfast ..

Nicodemus Plant

On television this morning there was a spot about the Nicodemus Plant. A group of neighbors were seated around a big plant in their front yard and a woman was reading out of the bible...John 3 ,4 : How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
Then they watched the yellow flowers open. Well it was our evening primrose plant..just bigger than ours because it had full sun. We used to have 9:00 p.m. parties to watch the evening primrose open. I never heard of the Nicodemus plant before.

bicycles

Dorothy Langley came by this morning and loaded our bicycles into her truck. She's having a yard sale to make money to go to Romania . We gave her the helmets and the baskets and chains and the history of the bicycles. Somehow it was a sadder time for us than when we sold the motor home. The boy's bicycle was first David's and then Butches . John fixed it up and loaded it on the motor home when we first retired and made our big trip out west. My bicycle came from a yard sale at Martha's . They were on the front of the Honey all the way across country...We got them off one time in Oregon.
When we started going to Key Largo for the winter we parked the Honey and used the bicycles for transportation. The bicycle trail runs the length of Key Largo and we made many trips on it. We bought baskets so that we could go grocery shopping , and we rode to Harriets for breakfast , and to the flea market and serveral times we rode to Pennakamp which was about three miles north of America Outdoors. We rode south to Taviner one day...about four miles..We rode up to the Baptist Church on Sundays and chained our bikes to a palm tree. There were always people on the trail and most of them were people we knew. We loaded the bicycles on the Honey and drove down to Key West several times. We would park the Honey in the shade at the museum parking lot and leave Garvey there. We rode the bicycles all over Key West. We would go down to the southern-most point and ride along the beach.
When we camped on the Everglades on the way home from Key Largo, we would take an all day trip to the Anhinga Trail; where the alligators and birds lived. One day the crows got our lunch while we were walking the trail and they ate our peanut butter sandwiches. We had some good dirt trail rides in the Everglades and in Oscar Shearer State Park...That's the park where the scrub jays live. They landed on my head and shoulders and just sat there.
We rode the bicycles around the seven mile loop in Cades Cove while we were camping up there; several times we rode it half way. On one of our rides in Cades Cove my brakes failed and I went sailing down the hill past John yelling for him to get out of my way. I stopped on a convenient pile of dirt. The campground at Elkmont was a good place to ride, and the Big Meadows campground in Townsend is where we got on the trail and rode the length of Townsend. We took the bicycles to Big Ridge several times.
Well, that's another thing we have given up in our old age..We sure do miss dancing and bicycle riding and camping. Well we can still swim and exercise and walk and go to yard sales...

Trip to Dayton, TN

June 11,2006
Paul and Rose drove us to Dayton Church of Christ for Sunday School and Church where David and Melissa and Todd were conducting a campaign with 50 people from Mount Juliet . After dinner on the grounds, Paul drove the family around Dayton and Gpa narrated. He pointed out..the house where his grandparents lived, his school, the lake where he fished, the spot where his mother was born, the courthouse where the monkey trial was held, the Morgan furniture company (owned by his uncle) Bryan college (named for William Jennings Bryan) and many other landmarks.
We went to Buttram cemetery where His grandmother and grandfather are buried. (Lawrence E. Cunnyngham and Pearl
Morgan Cunnyngham.) Most of the Morgans and Cunnynghams are buried there, but we happened upon JMB's great grandfather's grave in an older cemetery. Rose took pictures of the tombstones for her family records.

Trip to West Knoxville..
June 9, 2006
'
We met Pat and Bill Davy at The Olive Garden today. Traffic was terrible on I-40 . I had asked Rose about the West Hills exit, but I found out about it the hard way. Trucks everywhere and construction on the exit. Bad. We stopped at McKays on the way home and got some videos of movies we haven't seen. We haven't seen hardly any so we just picked out some that looked like LIGHT FUNNY entertainment. I don't think VANILLA SKY qualifies, but it does have Tom Cruise in it.

June 8, 2006
Glenda and I went to see Betty today in Maryville. Betty took us to her favorite goodwill stores and to Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby now has 100% wool yarn for felting. I may get some for a winter purse. I got some black cotton yarn for a summer..fall pocketbook . I found the crochet pattern in the book that Rose loaned me..."stich'nbitch crochet". We all spent about three dollars and we got new clothes, shoes, and garden decorations. I got a lovely rock for my path, and a pure linen blouse. Betty took us to Schloskies for lunch. We ordered the thing she always orders which was vegetarian pizza and jalapeno potato chips . When we picked up the pizza we got big dill pickles with it. So our lunch was pizza ,potato chips ,and pickles ..very strange. I highly recommend it. Good!
We had a great time...It was a nice girls day out...

Stepping Stones

Wednesday, June 7 (Stacy's birthday)

Rose had all the materials for making stepping stones at her Memorial Day Party. She had forms like cake covers, square pans, round bowls. She sprayed them with Pam and mixed the concrete. While it was wet, we put our decorations on top of the concrete. Rose had painted some rocks and pieces of clay in pretty colors...she had sprayed some rocks gold. All we had to do was place them in our own design. After they dried I brought them home and Gpa and I placed them on The Path..We decided to place them by age from oldest member of the family (Gpa)to the youngest...(Amy)..There are two missing...Scott and Sam.... We left two places for them.
